At Actcessible, we believe theatre should be a space where everyone can take part, not just as an audience member, but as an active participant in the story. This summer, we are developing a series of digital theatre-based games and interactive stories designed to engage young people through creativity, accessibility, and inclusive design. These experiences are being built to support users with both visual and hearing impairments, ensuring that no one is excluded from the joy of participation.
Choose-Your-Path Video Stories
One of our key projects is an interactive video series where viewers influence how the story unfolds. In our version of Little Red Riding Hood, for example, audiences can choose Red’s personality and select the nature of the Wolf character, such as a villain, a misunderstood nature-lover, or a secret agent on a mission.
Each choice unlocks a different version of the story, encouraging empathy, imagination, and engagement. These videos are being developed with accessibility at their core. Subtitles and captions will be available for all dialogue and sound cues, and clear voiceover narration ensures compatibility with screen readers and audio-based learning. Visuals are designed with high contrast and simplified layouts to support users with low vision.

Squeakspere: A Theatre Vault Adventure
We are also developing Squeakspere, a digital game in which players guide a mouse through the backstage vaults of a theatre in search of ten lost tickets. The game is being designed specifically for blind and visually impaired players, with navigation guided entirely by sound. Players will be able to hear approaching hazards such as traps, broken wires, or moving props, and will receive real-time audio descriptions to help them understand their surroundings and progress.
The final version of the game will also include optional text-based instructions and visual enhancements to ensure it is accessible and enjoyable for d/Deaf and hard of hearing users as well. Every design decision is being made with inclusivity in mind, offering multiple ways to engage with the content based on individual needs or preferences.
Why This Matters
These projects reflect Actcessible’s mission to remove barriers to participation in the performing arts. By creating experiences that support both hearing and visually impaired users, we are challenging the idea that digital storytelling must rely on a single sense. Instead, we are building tools that are adaptable, inclusive, and representative of the diverse communities we serve.
Our goal is to ensure that disabled and neurodivergent children are not only included in creative work, but central to how it is imagined and delivered.
What Happens Next
We expect to release early versions of both the video stories and the Squeakspere game later this year. We will be inviting young people, families, schools, and disabled creatives to test these experiences and help us refine them.
If you are interested in taking part, or would like to know more about our accessible digital work, please contact us at contact@actcessible.co.uk.
Together, we are reimagining what accessible theatre can look and sound like.
